By this time the thunderous cloud had tracked on towards Skegness and play got underway belatedly on the slow damp pistes. The rain had washed away the curling slope characteristics of the playing surface to the guest players' advantage with the host members struggling. However, with the warmth of the evening, the playing conditions slowly reverted. Three sessions of roughly thirty minutes resulted in an interesting evening of petanque for all the ten teams. At the end of scheduled play, only one team emerged with the maximum of three wins, and similarly only one team at the other end of the scale. The club chairman Peter presented the wooden-spoonists with bottles of vin rouge and similarly celebratory bottles to the top two teams amidst cries of 'fix' as he himself was a winner! However appreciation must go to Peter for organising the evening and also to Jackie for dragging the guests over from the neighbouring counties at short notice! A special thanks to all the pub staff for putting on a well received spread, rounding off a very enjoyable social evening of petanque.

This event, initiated at the previous week's league encounter with the Nag's Head team, where both teams were found to be without a league fixture on this day, looked like being a damp affair as a thunderstorm lashed the pistes at the scheduled start. With all participants sheltering in a crowded bar, the 'á la mélée' format was born. Invited guests from the Nag's Head were pitched in with a good turnout from the host club and partners were drawn out of the hat - or was it a beer glass?
